1927-D Double Eagle

Original $20 gold coin production was 180,000. The main problem was that when they were sold in 1928, the economy was in a complete fall and nobody wanted government gold coins. In 1933, all gold was recalled nationwide and became illegal to hold.

Most of the original coins were presumably remained in Treasury vaults by this time. That made them a top melting target. Several coins have survived, making them one of the rarest in coin collecting.

1913 Liberty Head Nickel

Buffalo nickels replaced Liberty Head nickels in 1913. No liberty nickels were struck in 1914, according to US Mint archives. Several years later, a collector unearthed five of these coins. Later, Samuel Brown, a mint employee, was reported to have hit them.

Some analysts believe they were hit at the end of 1912 as a rehearsal run for 1913. Regardless, they are scarce and auction prices reflect that.
